www.goa-art.com is promoted by Art Chamber, Galeria de Belas Artes, first of all for the exposure of Goan art and artists through the Internet. It started as the first community website in Goa in 2000. Since then it went through many changes.
The Gallery itself however had been established back in 1997; It moved one year later to the location which is now known as Castelo Vermelho. The building however found its present form only in 2005 when the exhibition space with the large translucient Dome was completed.
The
main exhibitions are now 'under the Dome', whereas the previous exhibition
space has been dedicated to late Dr Pedro Adao, the former Portuguese Consul
of Goa. Annually exhibition of all Goan artists are being held here in his
honour. It's otherwise also known as Yolanda's Galeria where Goan renowned
artist Yolanda de Sousa shows her work during the rest of the year.
From 1997 to 2003 Art Chamber dediceated it's work to the promotion of local Goan artists. Since there were very few other initiatives during that period, one can say Art Chamber was the craddle of Goan art and nursed its budding artists. After that new Galleries opened in the state of Goa and the focus shifted to the national level and Christian art as well.
Many other activities to promote art in the state had been conducted by the Gallery, competitions, annual "learn to paint" classes, a number of workshops (f.e. with Fulbright Foundation) etc.
Today there are Goan artists represented as well as national and international artists, making the Gallery again a frontrunner towards an exchange of national and international art. The location of Goa with its large international tourism is certainly supporting this cause.
